Dare County Democrats Request In-Person Town Hall with Congressman Greg Murphy
KITTY HAWK, NC — March 21, 2025 — The Dare County Democratic Party formally requested that Representative Greg Murphy schedule an in-person town hall meeting during the district work period, March 17-21, 2025.
In a letter addressed to Rep. Murphy’s offices in Washington, D.C., and Manteo and sent on February 26, the Dare Democrats expressed a strong desire for an open dialogue between the Congressman and his constituents to address pressing issues affecting the 3rd Congressional District.
“With many recent actions taken by federal lawmakers and officials under the new administration, our community is eager to better understand how these decisions will impact our daily lives,” said Susan Sawin, Chair of the Dare County Democratic Party. “An in-person town hall would provide an excellent opportunity for residents to engage with Representative Murphy and discuss these concerns.”
The letter highlighted two key areas of concern:
- Healthcare and Social Safety Nets: The potential impact of recent budget negotiations and federal policies on Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and biomedical research funded by the National Institutes of Health. Over 72,000 individuals in the district receive health insurance through the ACA marketplace, and more than 170,000 people are on Medicaid and CHIP. Additionally, more than 180,000 constituents depend on Social Security and 165,000 rely on Medicare for health coverage.
- Federal Job Reductions and Local Impact: The economic ramifications of potential federal job cuts, particularly within agencies that provide critical services to Dare County, such as the National Park Service, the National Fish and Wildlife Service, the Coast Guard, and the Department of Education. These agencies play an essential role in maintaining the safety, education, and natural resources that benefit both residents and visitors.
The Dare County Democratic Party emphasized that open communication is vital to ensuring that the voices of constituents are heard and that their concerns are addressed.
“We look forward to engaging with Rep. Murphy and working together to protect the well-being of our district,” added Sawin.
The Dare Democrats have not received a response from Rep. Murphy to date.
