Hosted by: Dare County Democratic Party
On Wednesday, April 16th, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, the Dare County Democratic Party will host a vital community Town Hall at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center in Manteo. This important gathering will bring together neighbors, local leaders, and policy experts for a timely conversation about how recent federal policy changes—specifically sweeping cuts led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—could impact the State of North Carolina, including Dare County’s schools, health care system, and veterans’ services.
The event will feature special guest Wiley Nickel, former U.S. Representative for North Carolina’s 13th District. Nickel, a former state senator and attorney who served in the Obama White House, has long been a champion for working families, voting rights, reproductive freedom, and access to quality education and health care. Although his seat was eliminated through partisan gerrymandering in 2023, he remains a leading voice for fair representation and strong Democratic leadership across North Carolina.
Republican Congressman Greg Murphy, Dare County’s current representative in Congress, has also been invited to attend and participate.
Alongside remarks from Wiley Nickel, the Town Hall will feature a panel of local voices from the education, health care, and veterans’ communities. These panelists will share on-the-ground perspectives on how federal budget decisions are playing out across the Outer Banks and what’s at stake for residents in the months ahead.
“This is more than a political event—it’s a community conversation,” said local organizer Laura Allendorf. “We want people from across Dare County to feel welcome, to get informed, and to take part in shaping our future.”
