Voting is the most important job in a democracy, and every vote still counts. In the 2016 presidential election, more than 136.5 million people voted, but the Electoral College decision was determined by a mere 77,744 people—about one-twentieth of one percent.

The Dare County Democratic Party encourages you to register and then vote in every election. You’ll find everything you need to know here. For more details, visit the website of the NC State Board of Elections.

Voting options

In North Carolina, there are three ways to vote in an election: at your precinct polling location on election day, during early voting, or by mail as an absentee.

Election day voting

The most common way to vote is on election day at your precinct polling location. Find my polling place.

Early voting

Voters in any municipal election may cast their ballots early at either of these two sites:

Kill Devil Hills Town Hall
102 Town Hall Drive, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948
Weekdays Oct. 19–Nov. 3, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Absentee voting

If you will be away from your polling place or otherwise indisposed on election day, you can still vote by using an absentee ballot.

Voter registration

You may register to vote in Dare County if you are—

  • A citizen of the United States; and
  • 18 years of age or older by the election date; and
  • A legal resident of Dare County for 30 days by the date of the next election.

Registration is easy. Just complete the NC Voter Registration Application and return it to the Dare County Board of Elections office. You may drop-off the form during normal business hours or send it by mail. Addresses for both options are shown above.

The Voter Registration Application is also available at the following locations:

  • North Carolina Board of Elections website
  • Dare County Board of Elections office
  • Dare County public libraries
  • DMV
  • Town hall offices
  • Various public assistance agencies.

The application form must be postmarked or delivered 25 days before the date of an election.

Party affiliation

When you register, you will need to declare your party affiliation. You may register with any party recognized by the State of North Carolina—Republican, Democrat, or unaffiliated. Party affiliation determines the primary election in which you are eligible to vote.

An unaffiliated voter is currently allowed to vote in the primary of his or her choice—Democrat or Republican. On election day, unaffiliated voters must state which political party they affiliate with and in which primary they wish to vote.

Participating in a partisan primary will not affect your status as an unaffiliated voter on the general election day.

Each and every vote matters. So, if getting to your polling place poses a problem, call us at 252-219-0074, and one of our volunteers will get you there.
